Simpler authentication settings

I redesigned a simplified authentication settings experience that supports connecting to multiple identity providers.

The result was a revenue uplift from unblocking customer adoption, and an experience admins find intuitive.

Running a workshop with support
taking stock of the experience
I audited existing experiences, and found settings were spread across multiple pages. A workshop with some of our support team confirmed the confusion this caused.
Diagrams to understand the model
designing for a simpler mental model
I explored different concept models, trying to get as close as possible to what admins would expect. This meant concealing some parts of the behind-the-scenes architecture to simplify to what customers needed to see and know.
Sketch to communicate the before and after
getting supporting teams up to speed
I used sketches to communicate a complicated technical solution with visual metaphors and diagrams. This allowed us to better communicate with outside teams that we depended on.

Usability testing with clickthrough prototypes showed completing tasks was easy and predictable. I worked with development to implement the redesign.

Design decisions

Streamlining settings

I consolidated settings that were across 5 individual pages into a standard form pattern to boost usability.

Summary of applied settings

When not editing these settings, a summary card shows administrators what settings are applied in a readable format.

Communicating the model

I used sketches to communicate what we were doing and why with visual metaphors and diagrams.

Impact

The project delivered a large uplift in adoption from migrating customers, with a a positive revenue impact.

Admins have given us positive feedback on the experience, and some other parts of the administration experience are being updated to follow the patterns I set out.
