teams alongside hierarchy
Cross-functional teams help you understand who someone works closely with. I added tabs for each of the teams a user is part of, so you can see them in the context of both their reporting line and teams.
shape of your org
Most staff directories only list managers and direct reports. We learned hierarchy can sometimes be a useful way to get a quick read on the shape of an org, so we show the management chain all the way up from a user’s profile to the top.
Avoiding the cold start problem
I brainstormed ideas to populate a directory with the data we already had from user profiles in Jira and Confluence. I wrote a brief for an illustrator for a set of tiles based on the most commonly used job titles and departments to feature in our directory.
teams and contributors
We learned from users that they wanted to know who to reach out to when they had questions about a project, but also which team was responsible.
I designed a component that allows adding (or creating) a team, and then selecting individual members - to give the level of granularity users wanted.
understand people and teams better
As a result of the connection this creates between people, teams and work - user profiles in Jira, Confluence and Atlas are a source of truth on what people are working on, and what expertise they have.
We have thousands of users active weekly in Atlas, and built a product our users tell us they love ❤️
What I learned
People make the product - Atlas is the sum of all of us and all our decisions. Debating as a team about what we’re building, and what the product should be were some of my favourite moments, and was crucial to launching.
